Wasted potential in a bearable but dull low budgeter
I don't much like to rag on films of this sort, the hopeful affairs with their sincerity and commitment, but I just wasn't sold on this one. In terms of plot and setting it could have been a cracker, with environmental activists occupying a soon to be destroyed oil rig in the hope of preventing the demolition and resultant damage to the sea bed, but inevitably discovering that bad things are going on, allegiances are shady and information has been withheld. There are deaths, skullduggery and an interesting if bonkers and ill explained explanation for it all. Regrettably the film is slow and neither especially well written or acted, it aims for suspense and psychological fear but is too predictable to really work. Julian Kean directs with a fairly sure hand and the cramped and dark cinematography of Jan Pester is another plus, giving things a sense of ill lit intrigue that provides a certain hook, the earlier scenes where things are just powering up do have a degree of tension, its just that when the film really gets in gear things don't do so well. Shock and awe are sadly lacking, as are any good gory moments. The acting is enthusiastic rather than especially accomplished, a bit weak in a lot of places, but with some brighter spots. The women of the piece do best, Juliet Diamond, Kerry Norton and Juliet Peace are all reasonably effective, but of the men no one does very well, with Jaason Simons driven but not compelling as the slightly unlikeable activist leader, David Rae making a better impression as the stoned seeming Mole and Noel Fitzpatrick best as the serious minded wheelchair bound Crawford. The biggest problem with the film is that it is just a bit dull and tedious and as things draw on it only becomes more so, there is a final twist that though predictable could have been interesting but just ends up weak and all round things just aren't fun, exciting or tense enough. Some bleak atmosphere is the best thing about this film in the end, but it isn't enough and I can't say I had an especially worthwhile time. Ultimately then, not terrible but not recommended, a worthy effort without being a success.
